Virtual reality system, Pompeii. Researcher testing the LIFEPLUS virtual reality system used to explore the Roman ruins of Pompeii, Italy. Developed from March 2002 to November 2004, this system uses augmented reality (AR) technology to provide interactive immersion in a recreation of Pompeii. Video, audio, photographic and reconstruction data are combined to superimpose audio-visual information on what the tourist sees in front of them. This augmented reality is supplied through the head mounted display (HMD) that the researcher is wearing. LIFEPLUS was developed by researchers from many European countries, including Italy, Greece and Switzerland.
