Tourist computer guide, Pompeii. Handheld computer being used as a guide on a tour of the Roman ruins of Pompeii, Italy. The computer uses WHYRE technology, a context-aware mobile application developed by the Italian MUSE project (established 2000). The device uses wireless technology and sensors to detect where it is on the site, and it then provides the tourist with the necessary information. This includes 3D reconstructions of Pompeii, and information on the archaeology and history. This system was tested at Pompeii in 2003. The MUSE project is managed by the Ducati Sistemi company, and is part of the Italian National Research Program on Cultural Heritage.
