Wireless internet symbol. This symbol denotes the ability to access wireless internet on devices such as laptops, PDAs (personal digital assistant), mobile phones, games consoles and computer peripherals. The device must be equipped with an adapter that can receive radio signals emitted by a router or access point and be within range of the signals, a zone known as a hotspot. Wireless signals can also be used to build networks between numerous computers. Devices must conform to one of the number of wireless standards, known as Wi-Fi, before being able to access the signals. In 2007, the most common standards defined by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) are 802.11b, 802.11a and 802.11g.
