Total solar eclipse of July 10, 1972, photo- graphed from Point Escuminak, New Brunswick, Canada. The surface of the Sun is almost entirely hidden by the moon, but part of the Sun's lower atmosphere - the chromosphere - is still visible as a bright red arc. It is uneven because of flame-like prominences protruding into the surrounding upper atmosphere of the Sun, the white corona. Taken on Kodachrome II, 1000mm lens, f12.4, 1/125 of a second.
