Fallopian tube section. Coloured light micrograph of a section through the ampulla of a fallopian tube. The fallopian tube, or oviduct, conveys the egg from the ovary to the uterus. The ampulla is the widened end of the tube that curves over the ovary. At centre left is the ampulla's lumen, which is lined by folded mucosa (green). On the surface of the mucosa beating cilia (not seen) move the egg towards the uterus. Layers of muscle (blue) make up the oviduct wall, the peristaltic action of which pushes the egg along. The outermost layer (grey) is a connective tissue layer called the serosa. Magnification: x30 when printed 10cm wide.
