Fallopian tube. Coloured Scanning Electron Micro- graph (SEM) of a cross-section through a Fallopian tube. The Fallopian tube (oviduct) is a muscular tube connecting each ovary to the uterus, and down which the egg passes. At centre is the lumen lined by a folded mucosa (purple). On the surface of the mucosa are ciliated epithelial cells; the beating cilia move the egg towards the uterus. Deep layers of muscle (grey) make up the oviduct wall, and these circular and longitudinal muscles undergo gentle peristaltic motion pushing the egg along. It is in this tube that fertilisation usually takes place. Magnification: x56 at 6x7 size. x72 at 4x5ins
