Neuron. Confocal light micrograph of a neuron (nerve cell, red) from the vestibular area of the brain. Glial cells (support cells) are green. The neuron's cytoskeleton has been dyed red. The cytoskeleton is responsible for intracellular transport, cell structure and motility. Neurons are responsible for passing information around the central nervous system (CNS) and from the CNS to the rest of the body. Glial cells provide structural support and protection for neurons and also supply then with nutrients and oxygen. The vestibular area transmits auditory signals from the ear to higher parts of the brain where they are processed into sound.
