Harvesting red deer egg cells. Two veterinary surgeons using an endoscope (seen on monitor at left) to harvest ova (egg cells) from a red deer hind (Cervus elaphus) for in vitro fertilisation (IVF). The ova will be fertilised with sperm and the resulting zygote grown in a lab until it reaches an early stage of embryonic development. It will then be implanted in the hind's uterus. Several embryos are usually implanted to give the greatest chance of a successful pregnancy.
