The doctor has placed the diaphragm side of the stethoscope attachment over the girl's heart. This diaphragm side is used to listen to low-pitched sounds. The sound of the girl's beating heart is transmitted through the tube to earpieces in the doctor's ears. This will allow the doctor to detect disorders such as an irregular heartbeat, or heart valve abnormalities.
