The blue light seen is used to guide the dentist's use of the lamp, as the ultraviolet light is not visible. The ultraviolet light provides energy to break chemical bonds, causing the cement to set. Sometimes the technique is used for some types of dental filling materials. The tooth being repaired here is one of the pre-molars. The gums around the tooth are inflamed. This sort of treatment is typically carried out to treat tooth decay (dental caries). The tooth is drilled down and a cap (an artificial tooth) fitted on the healthy remnants.
