Alcoholic hepatitis. Coloured light micrograph of a section through the liver of a patient with alcoholic hepatitis, inflammation of the liver due to prolonged heavy alcohol consumption. The normally regular cellular structure of the liver has been disrupted here, and large vacuoles of fat (yellow) are seen. Hepatitis can lead to fatigue, abdominal pain, vomiting and fever, although in chronic hepatitis any symptoms may be vague. Chronic alcoholic hepatitis can lead to liver failure and death. The circular structures at centre are bile ducts, which transport bile, a fat emulsifier used in digestion, from the liver to the gall bladder. Magnification: x100 when printed 10cm wide.
