Harvey Washington Wiley (1844-1930), US food chemist. Wiley studied chemistry in the USA and Germany, working under Hofmann and Sell. Back in the USA, in 1882, he accepted the position of Chief Chemist at the Department of Agriculture. He worked on developing food laws, culminating in the 1906 Pure Food and Drug Act. The laws were aimed at preventing the adulteration of genuine foods by cheaper, less nutritious and sometimes hazardous substitutes. From 1912, Wiley worked as a consumer champion for the magazine Good Housekeeping. This photograph is from the Bain News Service, one of the USA's earliest news picture libraries.
