Ernst Schweninger (1850-1924), German physician. Schweninger studied in Munich, graduating around 1870. He specialised in dermatology, but his views were controversial as he maintained that medicine was not a science. Around 1880 he became the personal physician of Otto von Bismarck, and was appointed professor of dermatology against the wishes of the Berlin medical faculty. In 1900, he founded a school teaching techniques of natural therapy. This photograph, which was taken in the period from the 1890s to the 1930s, is from the Bain News Service, one of the USA's earliest news picture libraries.
