Portrait of Dorothea Klumpke (1861-1942), US astronomer. Klumpke was a student at the Paris Observatory, later joining the staff there. She worked on observations of the rings of Saturn, meteorites and stellar spectra. In 1899 she became the first woman to make astronomical observations from a balloon, and later became the first woman elected to the Astronomical Society of France.
