Leo Frobenius (1873-1938), German anthropologist. Frobenius made many trips to Africa, travelling to the Congo in 1904, and the Sudan and north-eastern Africa until 1918. From 1920, he was a professor in Munich, and then at Frankfurt University. He was part of the academic school that attempted to reconstruct the worldview of hunter-gatherers. He also built up a collection of nearly 5000 prehistoric African statues. Frobenius is said to have opposed the colonial viewpoint, instead describing Africans as inscivilised to the marrow of their bonesins.
