Leo Frobenius (1873-1938), German anthropologist. Frobenius made many trips to Africa, travelling to the Congo in 1904, and the Sudan and north-eastern Africa until 1918. From 1920, he was a professor in Munich, and then at Frankfurt University. He was part of the academic school that attempted to reconstruct the worldview of hunter-gatherers. He also built up a collection of nearly 5000 prehistoric African statues. Frobenius is said to have opposed the colonial viewpoint, instead describing Africans as inscivilised to the marrow of their bonesins. This photograph is from the Bain News Service, one of the USA's earliest news picture libraries.
