Erich von Drygalski (1865-1949), German explorer. Drygalski studied and worked on mathematics, geology and geophysics, but is also remembered for his explorations of the Arctic and Antarctica. He explored Greenland and the surrounding areas from 1891-3. From 1901-3, he led the German Antarctic Expedition to explore areas south of Kerguelen. Over the next 26 years he published 20 volumes and 2 atlases on this expedition. An island and glacier in Antarctica are named after him. Photographed between 1900 and 1920, in Berlin, Germany.
