William Speirs Bruce (1867-1921), Scottish oceanographer, in academic dress. Bruce initially registered to train as a doctor, but on a visit to Edinburgh to study natural sciences he discovered the new science of oceanography, and this became his lifelong passion. Bruce led the Scottish National Antarctic Expedition (1902-4) that explored the Weddell Sea. One of the achievements of the expedition was the establishment of Omond House, a base on the South Orkney Islands and the oldest permanent base in the Antarctic. Photographed in 1910.
