Tadpole collection. Herpetologist collecting tadpoles of the endangered Andean marsupial tree frog (Gastrotheca riobambae) for a captive breeding programme. The Andean marsupial tree frog has its own method of reproduction and does not lay clutches of eggs like most frogs. The male frog fertilises the eggs externally and then places them in a pouch on the back of the female frog. The eggs are carried by the female until they reach tadpole stage. The female then deposits the tadpoles in a pool where they develop to young frogs. Photographed in the Inter-Andean valley, near Quito, Ecuador.
