The structures seen here contain antigens specific to Herpes simplex, formed into complexes by adding a glycoside adjuvant. H. simplex antigens (usually proteins) are obtained from the coat of the virus, harmless itself, and set in these 3-dimensional molecular structures. It is hoped they will trigger the human immune system to produce antibodies against H. simplex infection. H. simplex virus causes whitlows and cold sores.
