Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of an experimental vaccine for the Herpes simplex virus. The structures seen here contain antigens specific to Herpes simplex, formed into complexes by adding a glycoside adjuvant. H. simplex antigens (usually proteins) are obtained from the coat of the virus, harmless itself, and set in these 3-dimensional molecular structures. It is hoped they will trigger the human immune system to produce antibodies against H. simplex infection. H. simplex virus causes whitlows and cold sores. Genital herpes is a painful sexually transmitted disease that may recur and as yet has no cure. Magnification: x150,000 at 6x4.5cm size.
