Simpson Desert, Australia, satellite image. North is at top. This desert is part of the Australian outback. Sand dunes are seen running in straight lines approximately north-south, due to the prevailing winds. The sand is coloured red by oxidation of the iron in the rocks. The dark and white areas show the location of water, dry lakes and salt deposits. Image data obtained on 29 July 1992.
