Champagne Pool. Aerial photograph of the edge of Champagne Pool, a geothermal pool in Waitapu, New Zealand. The pool lies within a volcanic crater 60 metres in diameter and 60 metres deep. Carbon dioxide is bubbling out of the pool's hot acidic water. The pool contains heat-loving (thermophilic) bacteria and is a rich source of minerals, which are deposited around the edge. The orange deposits consist of antimony compounds, sulphur and traces of mercury, silver and gold. The thin yellow deposits are sulphur and the grey- white crusts are deposits of silicon dioxide.
