Rock salt crystals. Rock salt is formed when sea water evaporates, leaving a sediment known as an evaporite. The regular crystals are known as cubic or isometric. Large, well-developed crystals are rare as they are unstable unless stored in zero moisture conditions. The crystals in this sample are up to 60 millimetres across.
