Enterococcus faecalis. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of Enterococcus faecalis bacteria (previously known as Streptococcus faecalis). This gram-positive ellipsoid bacterium tends to form short chains. The bacterium is in the process of dividing through binary fission. The regions containing the nucleic material are visible as round, yellow and red structures within the two daughter cells. E. faecalis exists as part of the normal flora of the human alimentary tract, but may cause infections in the urinary tract. It may cause bacterial endocarditis following gynaecological or genito-urinary surgery and pneumonia. Magnification: x30,000 at 6x4.5cm size.
