The Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall (blue roof, lower centre) was opened in 1980, and was built as a memorial to Chiang Kai-Shek (1887-1975), who was leader of the Republic of China (ROC) from 1928. Following the Chinese Civil War (1926-1949), the government of the ROC retreated to Taiwan. leaving the mainland under the control of the Communist Party of China.
