Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Park. Satellite image of the Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Park (the rectangular area), in Tapei, the capital of Taiwan. The Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall (blue roof, lower centre) was opened in 1980, and was built as a memorial to Chiang Kai-Shek (1887-1975), who was leader of the Republic of China (ROC) from 1928. Following the Chinese Civil War (1926-1949), the government of the ROC retreated to Taiwan. leaving the mainland under the control of the Communist Party of China. Chiang then served as the President of the Republic of China for the rest of his life. Image taken by the Ikonos satellite on 13 February 2000.
