Bamboo shoots processed and stored in a jar. These shoots are edible, and are harvested for human and animal consumption. Each of the shoots has been cut in half lengthwise, and this has revealed a series of internal hollow sections. These hollow sections elongate along with the shoot as it forms the tall woody cane of the adult plant. Bamboo is a member of the grass family Gramineae. Bamboo is found in tropical and subtropical areas, most commonly in Asia.
