Egg shell material. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the lattice making up the fine structure of an egg shell. Most of an egg shell is calcium carbonate. Hard-shelled eggs are produced by birds and some reptiles. The shell protects the embryo inside and also controls the passage of air in and out of the egg through pores. Thousands of these tiny pores cover the egg shell surface. Magnification unknown.
