The artist is said to be John Preston Neale (1780-1847) but is has also been attributed to George Shepherd Senior (active 1800-1830s). The Mote had been the seat of Lord Romney, Lord Lieutenant of Kent from 1895-1927 it was the residence of Sir Marcus Samuel (Lord Bearsted) founder of the Shell Transport and Trading Company.); by Maidstone Museum and Bentlif Art Gallery .
