An illustration from about 1470-1475 of a teenage Alexander the Great riding Bucephalus. Alexander III of Macedon (356-323 BC), commonly known as Alexander the Great, was a Greek king who conquered the Persian Empire. Bucephalus was Alexander the Great's horse and one of the most famous actual horses of antiquity. As a 13-year-old, Alexander tamed the massive horse and it became his companion in battle.
