Bill Hart, 27 year old Communist, said to be the leader of the squatters, and six other men were escorted from the 500 room Empire Hotel, Buxton, Derbyshire, after police squads had battered down barricades to evict eighty defiant squatters from the requisitioned building. A Derbyshire police official said the men would be charged with resisting lawful execution of a sheriff's warrant. Some sixty police and about a dozen bailiffs evicted the squatters from the hotel, under authority of a writ of possession order granted by the High Court. Hart, who injured his hand erecting the barricades, appealed to the police "As members of the working class refuse to carry out the eviction". Photo shows Bill Hart, hand bandaged and in a sling, pictured in a window of the Hotel. The white strips are for signalling to friends outside the besieged building. - 7th December 1949. 固opFoto
