Uxmal, Mexico, satellite image. North is at top. The ruins of this city are at centre, surrounded by dense forest and access roads. The city, which dates from around 500, was built by the Mayan civilisation. The long building at the southern edge of the site is the Palace of the Governor. It is thought that this was aligned to point towards the southernmost rising of the planet Venus, an event that occurs every eight years. Image obtained by the Ikonos satellite on 28 August 2002.
