Burnt leg. Third degree burns to a patient's lower leg and ankle. Third degree or full-thickness burns are those that have penetrated the entire thickness of the skin and have reached underlying fat and muscle tissue. Such burns usually destroy all of the skin's nerve endings so are not usually painful. They may be bright red, waxy or brown in colour, and there is no blister formation. Third degree burns are treated with skin grafts to replace lost skin.
